Lakewood WA considers pit bull regulation
THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
LAKEWOOD, Wash. -- The city of Lakewood is looking at tightening up its animal control laws after reviewing a recent case where two pit bulls attacked a family.
No one was injured in the attack, but family members had to get into or on a vehicle to avoid being bitten or worse. They told City Councilman Ron Cronk, who advised city officials.
Officials found that the dogs' owner once had other pit bulls that were were destroyed because they attacked some people.
City Manager Andrew Neiditz says in examining dangerous dog calls in Lakewood in the past several years, he found most involved pit bulls.
Neiditz told the City Council last night that officials will look at Auburn's ordinance, passed in 2006, which lists 12 dog breeds, as potentially dangerous and requires owners to register them with the city. The breeds include pit bulls and bull terriers.

Would An American Pit Bull Be The Right Pet For YOU?
Thinking about getting an American Pit Bull Terrier? Wondering if an APBT is the right dog for you? Here are a few things you should consider when deciding whether or not to get an American Pit Bull Terrier.
American Pit bull Terriers need LOTS of exercise. Running, climbing, walking, playing fetch, jogging, swimming or any other physical activity will be fine. If you are not athletic - you still have to exercise your APBT. After all, a tired dog is a happy and obedient dog.
American Pit Bull Terriers tend to be quiet dogs. Unlike most yappy dogs, they tend to be on the quite side. They will bark when playing or to 'alert' you of strangers and other noises. However, they have a low pitched voice which, does make their bark more tolerable.
American Pit Bull Terriers Can Be Aggressive Towards Other Dogs. While a well trained and bred APBT is not aggressive towards People, they can be aggressive towards other dogs. Just like with many other dogs breeds, if they encounter a strange dog the can become very aggressive. Usually, to protect their masters. However, if you properly train your dog, you can manage your APBT around other dogs. In some cases, competitions, pet parades, doggy parks and other crowded dog events may not be suitable for an APBT.
American Pit Bull Terriers do not usually suffer from genetic diseases. Skin problems, allergies, tumors, hip dysplasia and heart murmors are the most common medical issues in APBTs.
American Pit Bull Terriers do have social issues. Unfortunatly, thanks to ignorant dog owners and breeders, American Pit Bull Terriers have gained a bad reputation. If you plan to get an American Pit Bull Terrier, be preparred for harsh, social environments. APBTs are banned or restricted in some areas. Traveling with APBTs can also be a problem because, if you travel through a town that has a restriction (even if you are not aware) your dog can be taken just because of the way it looks. Traveling with out your dog can also be difficult. Finding kennels and boarding facilities can be hard.
American Pit Bull Terriers must be on their best behavior at all times because they are feared by ignorant people. The more APBT breeders, trainers and owners that take the time to train their dog properly and help prevent fighting, the more respected the breed will be.
So, while American Pit Bull Terriers are great companions, please take the time to make sure that you can commit yourself to their needs.

American Pit Dies While Saving Two Ladies From a Cobra

This is a picture of a Four-year-old American Pit Bull Terrier named Chief. Chief died on March 1st, 2007, while saving an 87 year old lady and her grand daughter from a Cobra. The woman and her grandchild were walking when they came upon a Cobra on their path. Chief shielded the two by jumping in between the Cobra and the two ladies. Chief was bitten by the Cobra in the mouth and later died. Reporters say that Chief continously wagged his tail until his final moments. Almost as if he was claiming his victory.
